They have always said that in a chain it is the weakest link that determines how strong the chain is when it is put to the test. That is an age old adage that really does crossover into the way you create and run your teams. Whether the team is being brought together to fill a sales function, a customer service function or if it is being brought together to achieve glory on the sports field, the philosophy has to be the same. You try to put in place strategies that make the chain ( or team) all as strong as each other and with the same loading capability as the next member (or link).
In a perfect world this will always be the case but sadly this is not a perfect world. Sadly, (or thankfully maybe) you are always going to get some team members who are stronger, or more motivated to succeed than others. Is this a bad thing?….no I dont think it is. It is this fact that makes a team such a success if they are handled the right way. You will always get some players who can run stronger, faster, score goals seemingly at will but it will be the lessor player who will step up on the days when the stronger ones have an off day. Thats great for the team
You have all read what TEAM stands for. Together Everyone Achieves More right? ( well if you haven’t then you have now.LOL ) If you can bring a team together and get them all pulling in the same direction they will achieve the goals of the team a lot faster. That’s true.. what is also true is that some members are able to pull a lot harder or rather get more done simply because they are better equipped when they join. But what about the ones that are not as well equipped.??
If they join the team and are not straight away the star performers is that a reason to drop them back to the benches..?? I don’t believe so, as a coach and if we take this over into the business world, the sales manager, the CEO or whatever position is running the team, is aware that some will be better than others, then right there is a great opportunity to bring those under performers over the line so that the team actually functions at its potential.
How do you do it? Well here’s a couple of ideas that have proved very useful in some of the comapnies I have been coaching.
- It is critical that all members are made aware of what the goal is..
- Each member needs to know what part he is to play in the running of the team
- Each member needs to know that his opinion counts
- Each member must get a chance for recognition and glory..
- The communication lines must be working between the members and management so that information can flow in both directions without any obstructions
- Everybody should be encouraged to share in the team successes as well as the defeats and learn from both as a team
These are 6 little nuggets that will help a team to find its feet and grow as a group. And dont forget “a star team will always outperform a team of stars..”
