It is just so true, you can do anything you want to do as long as you know how to do it..well if you are impatient like me that is sometimes easier said than done. Does this sound familiar to anyone??
Sometimes you just have to admit that you dont know everything and get some help..
I am running a business consultancy and I coach brick and mortar businesses on how to optimise their day to day processses to get the best out of their staff, their customers and most of all out of their profits. And that is a lot of fun and I do a lot of good. Its an area where I feel almost comfortable. I wont make the mistake of saying totally comfortable and then fall on my butt.
So now that I am looking into marketing online I find that I am totally outside my comfort zones. All the years of IT work have given me a good grounding in computers and networks etc, but when it comes to Web 2.0 I am back in the newbie category. So I have decided I need to learn as much as I can and go out and find an expert.
Well yesterday I did.
I met for the first time the Guru Granny, Gail Bottomley. ( www.gailbottomleyonline.com )
I spent the day with her in fact and everything that I had been stumbling along doing with Facebook,Twitter, Youtube etc all became a little bit clearer and I now have a resurgence in confidence and a better idea of where I will be going with my ever growing web presence.
Why do I think the web is the best thing since sliced bread. Well because it allows a business owner ( and a Business coach) to really get his message across to a huge market in a very short space of time. Thats great right.? In my inroduction video I mention that tthe internet is the largest market the world has ever seen. ( thats not word for word but its close
) and that marketing online has become a vehicle for freedom and choice…and it most certainly is.
But, and here’s the part that I needed to pull my head in and take a dose of honesty, you cant do it all on what you know alone. Get some help, go find someone who has done it all before and learn from them
Napolean Hill interviewed successful people to find out what they did that sets them apart from others who were not as successful. And that produced one of my favourite books ever, Think and Grow Rich. Why reinvent the wheel?? Just do what successful people do and stick to it and you will achieve your goals. So in my case, it has been that I need to go find someone who can teach me how to better understand the subject and better leverage my time in order to produce some quality results.
Because I work with business owners all the time, it is me giving them some advice , but now we are in an area that I am the student. But having said that I can still work with the same concepts that I use in my bricks and mortar. The first thing a business needs is customers right.? So how do you create customers in B&M. You create a system to generate leads based around market research and identifying a need then meeting it with your product or service.
But think about the size of the market you are now working in. The internet.. this is a market with staggering lead potential, but as in traditional business, not everyone is going to want your stuff..How do you find a way to sort out the ones that do from the ones that don’t. Well as I am finding you cannot hope to do it based on what you already know. You need to go find an expert. Like I found Gail.
Lets talk about the scale now of what we are trying to do here. In order to really cope with the size of the market the only thing to do is find an expert who is willing to teach you how he does what he does. Remember Napolean Hill? Well in order to generate leads for your business and still work inside a market the size of the internet I checked out a very well known guy called Jay Kubassek. I like this guys processes. And dont forget I am a systems guy. A successful business needs systems.
In a previous post I mention 5 profit multipliers.( See here) Well the first one, Leads is where Jay seems to really strut his stuff. I am currently doing some reading of one of Jay’s programmes he wrote for his company, CarbonCopyPro. Its all about bringing your market to you because as he says, people are going to do business with you and not your system. That is so true. For me its about relationships and it always will be even on the internet. Take a look at one of Jay’s programmes here.
So coming back to my little learning curve, I guess you could say that Gail has become my coach. And I am a coach with a coach. But you know what? I have now accelerated my learning curve like you wouldnt believe. Funny that..
Happy to have any comments aboout this. If you want a copy of the 5 Profit Multipliers I talk about in my earlier peice, then drop me a line.
To your success
Simon
