
Every now and then I meet a business owner who has started a business, either online or offline, who just doesn’t “get” the benefits of using Social media.
It makes me think that perhaps it is time to offer a few thoughts and suggestions that might help others take the fast track to Social media success.
First off, Social media, which ever application you choose, is not going to suddenly bring you traffic overnight simply because you create a Facebook page,Twitter account, YouTube channel or LinkedIn profile. That is not how it is going to work. But, over time it will increase your exposure and help you to create a following of people with whom a longer term relationship can be built.
Which Social media system should I choose?.
As an answer to the statement,” I don’t think Social Media will help my business” first take a look at who are the most important components in your business. Your customers right?? ….Are they using Social media?… You betcha…maybe not to promote themselves but they are in some way using it. So if you are not sure where to start, figure out first where your market hangs out and go there…Make that your guide.
Here are some ideas on which system to use and what you could make its purpose.
Facebook- Database creation and relationship building.
- Setup a Business page with an opt-in box to collect email addresses-You are going to need a valuable offer in exchange
- Regularly post updates that contain useful information
- Use a search application like Advanced Search 2.2 beta to specifically find potential clients. this might include joining targeted groups
- Maintain a consistent look and feel to your pages. remember this is not your personal profile it is your business page which is an extension of your web page.The replacement for FBML is called I-Frames and it allows your web pages to be displayed directly on a Facebook tab..
Twitter- Dynamic updates and smart linking strategy
- A micro blogging site so you can use headlines and shortened links to drive traffic to your webpage
- Use the search function to locate your prospects using keywords and mutual interests
- Quick updates to carry on a theme or strategy.
You Tube-Traffic Generation and Sales Conversion Strategy
- Promote your business visually using online video
- Teach your market exactly what they need to know about your product and how to use it
- Keyword enrich your video’s so they can be searched
- Create an emotional journey for your viewers and reinforce with a defined call to action whether it is to buy or to opt-in.
- Preparing visual content to use to keep viewers on your web page for longer which helps your “Google” juice.
- A professional profile to promote you, not so much your company. (although this is now changing with new initiatives being brought to the table by the designers of the site)
- A chance to network with potential Joint Venture partners
- Market information and advice from other professionals that can be used for the benefit of your own business
- Exposure to opportunities that you wouldn’t usually get a chance to benefit from..
These four are the ones that I focus on with regards to my own business. I have set them up so that they share information between applications in order to optimize my time at the keyboard. The one drawback of Social Media can be the time it takes to maintain a consistent strategy.
REMEMBER: Your customers use Social media to communicate with each other, share stories and experiences. Those experiences will also include their thoughts about doing businesses with companies  like yours. Treat them well, get to know them and most of all let them get to know you..
